Christ is wrapped in two cloths: the first is white, but obscured by shadows and dust that make it appear a dark gray; the other cloth is brownish, mixed with brown makeup. The scene takes place behind Mount Golgotha; Jesus' blood, like his wounds, are slowly healing in his Father's arms. His mouth half open and his eyes, pained by the suffering, are indicative of both the violent event and the transport. The Madonna faints, and one of the "Pious Women" reaches out to support her.
The other two women are in different poses:
Mary places her lip on the side of Christ's thigh, placing it aside, and kisses her veil. Cleopas extends his hand toward the crowd of spectators in a sign of prayer and blessing.
This reference is answered by the boy on the left side of the panel (facing the viewer), dressed in a pink suit with iridescent shades that tend toward blue. He raises his hands in prayer and gazes toward heaven. Next to him is an elderly man, placing his finger and hand on his graying beard, captured in the moment before he closes his eyes in a sign of suffering at what he sees. Next to him, hinted at with a few brushstrokes, is a young boy who turns his head toward prayer.
and rotates counterclockwise towards the viewer. The boy on the left of the panel (for the viewer) holding Jesus raises his gaze at the sound of prayer and seems to want to be a primary participant. To his left, a little taller, we find a younger boy; he is fixed on Christ, almost as if he is about to weep, as he recounts the event he is witnessing. Behind him, there is an old man, leaning on him as a sign of despair at the event he has witnessed; shadowed by the young man and by the hand and arm of the Pious Woman, he blends into the brownish shadows of the panel. The other man pulling Christ towards him is completely immersed in the power of transport; his great effort is evident from his posture, and he too is shaken by the event. Below him is a man of about middle age, with his right hand pointing to the boulder where he will be placed.
and with his eyes he already shows his interest in the collective Prayer.
I don't mean to conceal the fact that in this panel I took inspiration from Raphael and Lippi, changing the colors, the composition, and in some places even the dynamics. The landscape is barren at their feet, while the higher it rises toward Golgotha, the more ornate and filled it becomes with the Art of God. On Golgotha there is only one Cross, the main one, since it is the fulcrum of the event. The moment when the other two Crosses land has already occurred, so let's consider only Christ's Cross, its ropes, and the ladder. Below it we find part of the crowd, while in front is a large gray cloud, symbolizing the greatest betrayal, Judas. At its height, we find a ray of sunlight penetrating it, symbolizing that the benign and fervent Virtue of Love defeats every servile chain, a motto inspired by Life. Three more clouds are on the viewer's right, symbolizing the allegory of Betrayal, to which Christ fell, indicating that Betrayal takes on many forms, encompasses many people, and manipulates them at its will. On the other edge of the panel are three clear, graceful clouds. They symbolize the "Holy Spirit," "Joseph," Christ's Father, and "Mary," his Mother. Continuing along the lower part of the panel, there is a rocky knoll on which the legs of some transporters rest. The tree trunk at the lower left of the viewer and the cross above it with the inscription "Inri" are nothing other than symbols that, referring to Christ: the severed tree trunk represents Christ after the betrayal, the phrase "Inri" represents his fate. The canvases depict the moment before Christ was revealed to the Jewish people, with Pontius Pilate standing behind him.
