alberto-frisoni-senza-titolo
Alberto Frisoni - Untitled

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Alberto Frisoni's work is a clear example of an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a simple layering of color. The hues themselves are not entirely true to reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. The fundamental elements of expression in this work, therefore, are color and brushstrokes. Although firmly rooted in a figurative conception, the interpretation of tangible reality is profoundly material and gestural. The color is distributed in dense, full-bodied layers that almost elevate the painting's surface. Gesture is crucial, capable of giving form to the object with a few essential touches. The result is a powerfully alive and vibrant depiction, in an interpretation of painting that draws on the post-Impressionist tradition to achieve an extraordinary contemporaneity.

Alberto Frisoni was born in Fano in 1917, but his painting career was primarily spent in Turin.
