alfonso-grassi-uomo-pipa
Alfonso Grassi - Man with a Pipe

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Alfonso Grassi's artistic language is based primarily on a tendency toward realism, both in terms of subject matter and its interpretation. The choice of a simple subject, linked to humble everyday life, corresponds to the adoption of a modest, low-key pictorial language. The artist creates a domestic setting, and the composition has a linear and balanced structure. Grassi's realism is evident in not only contextual but also existential details, which indicate the permanence of values unchanged over time. Technically, he achieves this with a lively drawing style, capable of conveying an immediate and realistic image even in a monochrome work.

Alfonso Grassi was born in Solofra in 1918 and died in Salerno in 2002.
