Since the Classical era, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. This female figure is a highly significant object as it is one of the sketches that the painter Andrea Petroni drew for the fresco decoration of the Sala del Parlamentino in the Ministry of Agricultural Policies building, created between 1914 and 1918.

The sketch is very interesting, as it demonstrates how, in a truly veristic painter like Andrea Petroni, the Art Nouveau aesthetic was strong. Indeed, in the frescoes created for the Parlamentino Hall, the aesthetic influences of Art Nouveau are strongly felt, especially in those diaphanous and austere female figures. The Art Nouveau influence is also clearly evident in the drawing, formally speaking. The female figure is rendered with a clean, bold graphic line, which constructs the volumes by squaring them with a modernist aesthetic, fully in line with the Secessionist taste of the early 20th century. Hatching is therefore almost entirely eliminated, except for delicate shading. The result is a female figure that combines the concreteness of agricultural labor with a grace and mystery reminiscent of Pre-Raphaelite and Symbolist art.

Andrea Petroni was a painter originally from Venosa, where he was born in 1863, and died in Rome in 1943. He trained at the Academy of Naples and made his debut at the Promotrice partenopea in 1884. His works were also exhibited at the events of the Promotrice di Napoli between 1885 and 1912. He also exhibited in Florence and Milan in 1897, in Buenos Aires in 1906, and at the Venice Biennale in 1910. At the beginning of the 1910s Petroni moved to Rome where, from 1914 to 1918, he created the frescoes in the Sala del Parlamentino in the building of the Ministry of Agricultural Policies.

https://cjfh11-ee.myshopify.com/en/products/andrea-petroni-studio-per-la-decorazione-murale-del-mistero-dellagricoltura
