anonimi-quattro-quadri
Anonymous - Four Paintings

Four anonymous works in oil on canvas

The collection consists of two landscapes and two portraits. Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to truthfully and naturally capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been joined by a psychological one. Thus, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

The series of four works, not only in their subjects but also in their execution, demonstrates a classical and traditional artistic approach. Simply put, the four paintings draw on a figurative language that sees mimesis, or the imitation of nature, as the primary purpose of painting. However, we can detect some distinctions in the artistic sensibilities of the artists of each work, making this collection even more varied and interesting. We can see how the two landscapes draw on an Impressionist approach, with quick and concise brushstrokes that, in faithfully transferring sensory information to the canvas, leverage the expressive potential of color to convey a greater sense of freshness and immediacy. Of the two portraits, the one of the little girl adheres to an almost entirely naturalistic rendering, even though the brushstrokes are very lively and vibrant. The portrait of the woman, on the other hand, has a more iconic character, with a reduction of the facial features in an Expressionist style.

As we can see from an analysis of these works, they were created by painters with a solid academic background, gifted with excellent technique. The anonymous artists' artistic approach is extremely classical and traditional, and is based on the concept of mimesis, or the imitation of sensory data in a perfect and extraordinary naturalistic rendering.
