anonimo-santa-con-bambina
Anonymous - Education of the Virgin

The iconography of the work can certainly be identified with the so-called "Education of the Virgin," embodying all its distinctive characteristics. The scene depicts Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary, who is depicted imparting good precepts to the Madonna as a child, who, in this type of sacred subject, always holds an open book in her hands. The Education of the Virgin is a highly distinctive iconography, rarely found in Western sacred art. Its popularity developed especially between the 16th and 17th centuries, coinciding with the rise of genre scenes, or subjects featuring intimate, domestic settings. The fusion of the sacred subject with this type of sensibility led to the birth of iconographies such as that of the "Education of the Virgin."

A stylistic and formal analysis of this work reveals a prevailing classicist spirit. It is undoubtedly inspired by the great naturalism of the seventeenth century, which, aiming to correct the supposed errors of Mannerism, drew directly from the great masters of the late Renaissance, Raphael in particular. Hence the monumentality of the figures (especially Saint Anne), with their rounded forms that undoubtedly also bear witness to Titian. A thoroughly naturalistic rendering, then, also expressed in a pronounced atmosphericism. The artist, in fact, uses a highly dynamic, extremely painterly style, which brings the execution to life and is charged with freshness. The light strikes the subject from our left, creating subtle shadows with perfect verisimilitude. The physiognomic, even rather idealized, connotations of the subjects' faces are extraordinary, as is the expression of familial affection that emerges, typical of a sentiment of intimate religiosity widespread between the 17th and 18th centuries. The color scheme, featuring rather light hues, places the work more in the 18th century.

The artist who created this work can be identified as a worthy representative of the classicist style of the 16th and 17th centuries. This is evident in the work's formal balance, evident in both the composition and the pictorial style, which maintains a harmony and rigor still close to Renaissance naturalism. Likewise, the calm sentiments expressed in the overall atmosphere of the work, which draws on an intimate and domestic religious conception, are typical of the classicist movement, in stark contrast to the excesses of the Baroque.
