anselmo-sacerdote-prime-nebbie
Anselmo Sacerdote - First mists

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The work highlights Anselmo Sacerdote's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is compressed entirely into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, fleshes out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures themselves play a fundamental role. Furthermore, we find in this painter a certain tendency to structure things according to geometric principles that hark back to Cézanne. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is blended with a balanced palette of references and correspondences.

Anselmo Sacerdote (Turin, 1868-1926) began his career as an assistant to Vittorio Avondo, director of the museum until 1910, an artist and scholarly expert on medieval art. Sacerdote actively participated in the life and interests surrounding Turin's artistic associations, particularly the Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti, where he exhibited continuously from 1900, and the Circolo degli Artisti, where he was admitted to membership in 1903. During the same years, his paintings were featured in exhibitions held by the Societas Promotrice in Genoa and Florence.
