antonio-de-nisco-la-fioraia
Antonio De Nisco - The Flower Girl

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

The style of painter Antonio De Nisco, in much of his work, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language that leverages the potential of pictorial matter. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a vibrant manner. For this reason, through the technique of "sculpittura," he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion is also a central focus, conveyed through his vibrant gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Antonio Di Nisco's painting. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice that reaffirms the expressionism of his work: a preference for a pronounced monochrome of brown tones, from which the images emerge almost with difficulty, establishing a struggle with the pictorial matter.

Antonio De Nisco (1924-2008) was born in Apice and lived in Sinalunga. An art teacher since 1944, he studied under Italian and Eastern masters. He was the Artistic Director of the "Rigoli" ceramics factory in Brussels and created pieces for the Sevrés and Deft factories. In his youth, he was a sailor, and his profession led him to live for many years in the Middle East. He is the creator and leader of "Sculpittura," a unique technique he uses in his works. He is also a journalist, ceramist, sculptor, and decorator. His painting style has evolved over the years; from traditional figurative art, he moved to Tuscan and Neapolitan Macchiaiolo, and finally to his own genre, an avant-garde figurative style: sculptopittura. In his paintings the forms now become less linear and rigid and the oil colours are replaced by more full-bodied materials which allow for very evident reliefs so much so that it seems as if the artist, while painting, is sculpting.
