artista-sconosciuto-senza-titolo-129
Unknown Artist – Untitled

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. This work appears to be a fragment of a detached fresco, an example of ancient official portraiture.

It is difficult to give a precise and certain date for this work. However, the fresco fragment shown here exhibits all the characteristics of 15th-century official portraiture. The subject depicted is clearly a nobleman, and his physiognomy and hairstyle suggest 15th-century influences. Typical of that era, steeped in humanist culture, are the references to Roman official portraiture. The figure appears perfectly in profile, like an emperor on an ancient coin, and this influence is reinforced by the presence of a laurel wreath and a circle of plant sheaves. The celebratory nature, inspired by classical antiquity, is further enhanced by the presence of bunches of lush fruit and a sort of cornucopia visible on the right. The composition is completed by two ornamental bands, one with plant motifs at the top and the other in the form of a frieze at the bottom. Regarding the form, we can see that the artist employed a rather spare and essential technique, based on the use of thick black lines. The work has a rather two-dimensional character and the naturalistic rendering is achieved in a rather synthetic manner.

As previously mentioned, it's difficult to confirm the work's antiquity, however, both the subject and the painting's condition suggest a 15th-century setting. In this sense, the artist, given a certain simplicity of execution, can be classified as a representative of a local 15th-century master craftsman.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/0d1a1a2e-6ddb-421c-8aa2-34490b2df5df.jpg?v=1768469887
