artista-sconosciuto-trinita
Unknown Artist - Trinity

The Trinity is the most important dogma of Christian churches (God is one, but his essence is shared by three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). In Western art, this dogma has been interpreted in various ways, from the more abstract, particularly recurrent in the Middle Ages, such as the image of the triangle, to the more elaborate ones popular during the Renaissance and so on, with the figure of God the Father holding Christ on the cross (Masaccio's interpretation is famous). In this case, we are faced with a modality that became widespread starting in the 12th century, namely that of seeing the Son seated at the right hand of the Father. God the Father has a triangular halo, while the Son carries the cross, symbolizing the Passion, and in the center is a dove, personifying the Holy Spirit. The work in question also features the image of the celestial sphere, according to an iconographic variant that became widespread starting in the 17th century. The sphere represents the universe and is surrounded by a band with the signs of the zodiac.

The work interprets the subject of the Trinity with a highly classicist spirit. The artist, in fact, composes the work according to values of harmony and balance typical of the Italian tradition. The structure is very simple, centered on a central axis upon which the elements are arranged symmetrically. Formally, the painter displays a fine hand in characterizing the subjects, their clothing, and their facial details. The draperies are elaborate, yet the overall effect is characterized by a certain archaic flair, evident in the accentuated linearity. The color scheme relies on a remarkable chiaroscuro to define volumes and shadows.

The work was probably created in the 18th century, as can be deduced from the clear tones, especially the bright background. The execution, which displays a certain rigidity and archaism compared to the period in which the work was produced, suggests an artist from a local school of working-class origins. We are therefore faced with a precious testimony to intimate and domestic religiosity.
