Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This work is one of many remarkable studies of the human figure by Arturo Rietti. The two faces are depicted with frenetic and vibrant strokes that, despite their marked synthetic nature, still manage to convey the impression of the subjects' physiognomy and concreteness. This demonstrates the masterful technique of a master portraitist like Arturo Rietti, who, with just a few strokes, manages to create a vibrant representation. Note, in particular, the interplay of shading on the figure on the right, which enhances the woman's volume with minimal expressive means.

Arturo Rietti (Trieste, March 3, 1863 – Fontaniva, February 6, 1943). Between 1882 and 1884, he lived with his older brother Riccardo in San Giovanni Valdarno, where he painted peasants and workers in the villages of Tuscany in a veristic style. His “Study of a Young Girl” won the second-degree gold medal at the 1891 Exhibition, using a mixed pastel and tempera technique. He alternated stays in Trieste and Milan, and in 1903 he exhibited in Vienna. An anti-fascist from the beginning, the racial laws of 1938 put him in serious danger, and, outraged and embittered by the death of his wife, Elena Riva, in 1940 he moved to Milan, which he later left to take refuge with the Gallarati Scotti family in Fontaniva, then a meeting place for anti-fascist intellectuals, where he died on February 6, 1943. The largest public collection of his works is now housed at the Revoltella Museum in Trieste.
