The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The work bears the signature on the back of Clarence Henry Roe, a primarily landscape painter whose work was inspired by the landscapes of the Scottish Highlands. The present work features a composition that is often found in this artist's work, with the wooded landscape, based on the perspective depth of the path, and the wild animals that animate the scene.

The work, which bears the signature of Clarence Henry Roe, presents an extremely complex style, but its first fundamental characteristic is its immense technical quality. The artist's touch is so refined that it allows for a total immersion in nature. He achieves this result through an extraordinary modulation of color and, consequently, of light. The entire view is governed by tonal gradations that measure the space and give a sense of depth, blending perfectly with the vanishing point indicated by the path. The artist who executed it is not an impressionist; he remains faithful to the sensory element. Like Clarence Henry Roe's landscapes, this one too is steeped in a profound and lyrical realism that harks back to Constable's taste for the picturesque, but also to the Barbizon School and Corot. In this painting too, the brushstrokes are synthetic, but the recording of the natural element remains precise and accurate. It is especially noteworthy how the artist manages to capture the precise atmospheric situation in the painting in an absolutely coherent manner. We can clearly feel the clear, crisp air of a sunny day in the mountains.

The work bears the signature of Clarence Henry Roe on the back, eldest son of Robert Henry Roe, a famous Victorian painter. Clarence was born in Birmingham in 1850 and later moved with his family to Hampstead, London. He lived in Scotland, but in 1860 settled in Yorkshire, where he spent most of his life. The Roe family consisted of numerous artists with diverse specialties. Among them were Clarence's three brothers, Robert Herbert, Percy, and Colin Graeme, as well as one of his sisters, Eva Constance, who was a noted portrait painter. Clarence's uncle, Alfred Frederick, better known as Fred Roe, was a notable artist who exhibited at the Royal Academy. Clarence Henry Roe passed away in 1909.
