Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. Works inspired by the city of Rome are recurrent in Ugo Attardi's artistic production. In this painting, we see a bridge spanning the Tiber, the whole scene bathed in a fiery red hue, suggesting a scene evoking the emotion of a sunset bathing the entire landscape in its light. Indeed, these scenes became common in Attardi's work from his first trip to Rome in 1945 at the request of his friend Pietro Consagra, but he subsequently continued to depict various sections of the Tiber in this orange-red hue.

This work is a prime example of the fundamental components of Ugo Attardi's artistic practice during his Roman years. His expressive use of color emerges, leading him to synthesize reality by abstracting it into chromatic zones of consistently bright, luminous hues executed with rapid, bold brushstrokes. Subject and space integrate seamlessly in an elaborate interplay of planes and colors .

Ugo Attardi, born in Sori in 1923 and died in Rome in 2006, was a painter and sculptor.
