Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt to save the baby Jesus from the massacre of the innocents ordered by Herod. The theme of "rest from the flight into Egypt" is widespread in Western art, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. The scene is often enriched by the presence of figures of saints. In this case, we find, at the bottom left, a young Saint John, recognizable by his fur robe, his staff with a cross, and a lamb, which are typical iconographic attributes of the Baptist. He points to Jesus, foretelling his sacrifice. At the top right is Saint Catherine of Alexandria, recognizable by the presence of her instrument of martyrdom, a cogwheel. Above, cherubs fly among the leaves of a palm tree, another iconographic reference to martyrdom.

This work displays exquisite pictorial craftsmanship, with a 17th-century classicist spirit prevailing. The composition is highly balanced, with the main figures placed precisely at the center of the work, creating a striking symmetry. The figures are characterized by monumental masses, highlighted by the ample drapery covering their bodies. The artist achieves a complete naturalism in the delicacy of their gestures and the intimacy of their gazes and sentiments. All the figures are united by a balance of movements that intertwine, creating a harmonious rhythm within the overall composition. The landscape setting continues the Renaissance tradition, and the artist demonstrates an excellent technique in the use of sfumato. The elements, in fact, gently blend through the use of the tonal qualities of color. A dark palette, already typical of the 17th century, prevails, but there are also flashes of brilliance in the figures' robes. The light spreads naturally from the left, forming deep shadows in the drapery of the clothes.

The work has been attributed to Ludovico Carracci. Analysis of the painting certainly reveals affinities with seventeenth-century classicism, of which the Carracci Academy in Bologna was one of the most important centers. This can be seen in the work's formal balance, evident in both the composition and the pictorial application, which maintains a harmony and rigor still close to Renaissance naturalism. Likewise, the calmness of sentiments expressed in the overall atmosphere of the work, which draws on an intimate and domestic religious conception, is typical of the classicist movement, in stark contrast to the excesses of the Baroque.

https://cjfh11-ee.myshopify.com/en/products/attribuita-ludovico-carracci-fuga-dallegitto-di-santa-caterina
