It refers to one of the culminating moments of Christ's Passion, focusing the representation on the figure of Mary. The artist concentrates on the suffering of Jesus' Mother at the foot of the cross, highlighting her suffering in a composition of great psychological and emotional intensity. The situation is contextualized by the presence of the wood of the cross and (probably) Saint John behind the main figure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe execution of this painting exhibits an exquisitely Baroque spirit, both in its composition and in the pictorial technique employed. Compositionally, we can see how, in keeping with a typically 17th-century conception harking back to the great naturalism of the Renaissance, the subject is exalted in monumental plasticity. Specifically Baroque, however, is the artist's emphasis on the ample drapes of Mary's robe, which swell her forms in an extremely dynamic and flowing compositional rhythm. The Madonna's complex torsion also exhibits the same dynamism, in a theatrical tension pushed almost to the extreme, which is, again, typical of the Baroque spirit. Furthermore, from an executional perspective, we can see how the artist is perfectly in line with the pictorial styles in vogue between the 17th and 18th centuries, in the sense of a highly atmospheric, almost synthetic, approach, with a strong emphasis on sfumato.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe work is in fair condition. However, it was recovered through a restoration project that filled in large gaps in the painted surface with neutral hatching.
