autore-sconosciuto-re-salomone-2
Unknown Author - Saint Nicholas of Bari

The icon depicts Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, also known as Saint Nicholas of Bari. He is one of the most important figures in Christianity, venerated especially in Eastern religions. Indeed, he is depicted numerous times in Byzantine art. Saint Nicholas is the subject of numerous legends that spread, especially during the Middle Ages, and is historically known for his battle against Arian heresy, which saw him as a key figure at the Council of Nicaea. In Western iconography, Saint Nicholas is usually depicted as a bearded bishop with three golden apples. In this work, we have an iconographic variant that refers to the miracle of the three children resurrected by the saint.

A stylistic and formal analysis of this work reveals a prevailing classicist spirit. It is undoubtedly inspired by the great naturalism of the 17th century, which, aiming to correct the supposed errors of Mannerism, drew directly from the great masters of the late Renaissance, particularly Raphael. Hence the monumentality of the figure in its rounded forms. A total naturalistic rendering, therefore, which is also expressed in a pronounced atmosphericism. The artist uses a highly dynamic, extremely painterly style, which brings the execution to life and imbues it with freshness. The light strikes the subject, creating subtle areas of light with perfect verisimilitude. The saint's physiognomy, even rather idealized, is extraordinary, just as the benevolent expression is extremely engaging, typical of a sentiment of intimate religiosity, widespread between the 17th and 18th centuries. The color palette, featuring rather light hues, places the work more in the 18th century.

The artist who created this work can be identified as a worthy representative of the classicist style of the 17th and 18th centuries. This is evident in the work's formal balance, evident in both the composition and the pictorial style, which maintains a harmony and rigor still close to Renaissance naturalism. Likewise, the calm sentiments expressed in the overall atmosphere of the work, which draws on an intimate and domestic religious conception, are typical of the classicist movement, in stark contrast to the excesses of the Baroque.
