Byzantine art retains all its strongly archaic stylistic features, aimed at exalting the supernatural and divine nature of what is depicted. For this reason, the panel exhibits a marked anti-naturalism, still reminiscent of the Middle Ages. The conception of space is not rational, there are no regular proportions, and the subject appears very elongated. The facial features are generalized, and the gaze is lost in contemplation of the divine. These are all elements that contribute to the work's transcendent aura.
