b-robazza-fontana-di-trevi
Benedetto Robazza - Trevi Fountain

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and Modern times, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist currents of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. The work in question depicts a view of the famous Trevi Fountain in Rome. The work was created starting in 1731 by Nicola Salvi and completed in 1759 by Pietro Bracci.

As we can see in this bas-relief, Benedetto Robazza pursues a total naturalistic rendering, which he achieves through his remarkable technique. The artist manages to emphasize the subject's volumes, creating a balanced relationship within the work. The details are highly precise, with a certain idealization. The plasticity is very pronounced in both the anatomical renderings and the architectural structures. The artist's sculptural technique is characterized by a striking use of color in the strong contrast between solids and voids, between light and dark. The figures thus appear truly concrete and create their own space within the work. The whole is constructed on orderly and rational lines, in an overall concept of harmony and balance of the parts.

Benedetto Robazza was born in Rome in 1934 and passed away in 2020 in Rocca Priora. A renowned portraitist in demand by the greatest names in politics, finance, the military, the ecclesiastical world, and the entertainment world, Robazza was privileged to be invited to paint President Reagan. King Bhumibol Rama IX and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, and the President of Bavaria, Franz Josef Strauss, posed for Robazza. He also painted portraits of Alcide De Gaspari, Sandro Pertini, and Aldo Moro, as well as two portraits of Pope John Paul II. Finally, two busts of General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa and General Umberto Capuzzo. But we must also list at least the most important portraits of the great stars of yesterday and today: Rudolph Valentino, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, and Alberto Sordi, portrayed as an ancient Roman emperor of cinema.
