bruno-locci-freeze-frame
Bruno Locci - Freeze Frame

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Artist Bruno Locci's interpretation of landscape is highly original and compelling. It reflects a profound reflection on modern technology, which leads him to conceive of reality as if filtered through a screen or a photograph. In this sense, the title of this work, "Freeze Frame," is truly emblematic, indicating the artist's desire to immortalize nature in a moving snapshot—in the frame of a video. The most striking feature is that Bruno Locci conducts this operation exclusively through the traditional means of painting, creating a suggestive encounter between the past and the present. All this is possible thanks to the extraordinary technical skill of this painter who, in outlining a naturalistic rendering of the landscape, manages to instill, through the application of color, strong vibrations of movement, with a precise reference to the use of technological means through which to observe reality.

Bruno Locci, painter and photographer, was born in Cagliari in 1937 and passed away in Savona in 2010. Locci radically explored the potential of the photographic medium, creating large canvases emulsified with colored anilines. Creator of the legendary Equipe 84 boutique in Savona and then Genoa, a reflection of 1980s taste, Bruno Locci became an entertainer, publisher, and figurehead for a youth subculture obsessed with designer clothing and marked by a carefree, consumerist lifestyle, a clear break from the politicized lifestyle of the 1970s. From that youthful, fashion-conscious vantage point, he observed society as it became a spectacle, sensing the precariousness of grand ideologies, the crisis of conscience and values, the accelerating pace of life, the irresistible seductions of the image, the temptations of consumerism, and, through irony and nostalgia, he opened spaces in his work for dreams, emotion, and poetry.
