bruno-saetti-muro-della-giudicca
Bruno Saetti - Giudecca Wall

Landscape has always been a central focus of artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Bruno Saetti's artistic production demonstrates how the landscape subject has been completely transformed by the contemporary avant-garde. Artists' attention has shifted completely from the faithful recording of naturalistic data to reflections on the perception of sensory reality and its transposition into artwork.

Much of Bruno Saetti's painting is a clear example of Expressionist landscape painting. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with an almost brutal exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no regard for spatial depth. The brushstrokes delineate forms in a very tormented and nervous manner. Color is used according to an emotional and spiritual interpretation, without any connection to reality. Compositionally, the scheme of Saetti's works is often codified. At the center, the theme of the sun appears, summarized in the pure form of a large colored circle. The other elements of reality are arranged in the band below, forming a quasi-mosaic of colors applied with a vibrant ductus and expressing individual perceptive episodes. Chromatically, there is extreme balance, and it is always the large circle of the sun, generator of light, that sets the overall tone of the work.

Bruno Saetti (Bologna, 1902 – Bologna, 1984) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1924 and held his first solo exhibition in 1927. Success came in 1928 with "The Judgement of Paris," a work that was accepted into the Venice Biennale, where he would participate 14 more times, including a solo exhibition in 1938. He also became a teacher in Venice, and then director of the Academy from 1950 to 1956. Saetti is remembered above all for his fresco technique, so much so that he was called the "Italian fresco master."
