Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. Even in the interpretation of artist Umberto Maria Baldassarri, aka Bum, the subject of the nude body is used as a pretext for a representation of phenomenal reality according to the Cubo-Futurist aesthetic that informs his pictorial practice.

Trained from a young age in a Futurist environment, Bum's entire pictorial production is influenced by that association. This leads him to represent reality in an extremely dynamic manner, breaking down space and the subject contained within it, exploring, through painting, the relationships between the subject and the space and the potential possibilities of movement. Thus, even in a static figure, such as a reclining body, Bum seeks to highlight its potential dynamism and its interactions with space. For this reason, the painting is conceived as a continuum between subject and background, in which the body and the wall behind it are subject to the same decomposition. The systematic decomposition of reality takes into account every possible variable, every possible development. The perceptible world is thus transformed into an intricate interplay of planes that reflects its complexity even in the choice of color palette.

Umberto Maria Baldassarri, known as Bum, was an artist originally from Mantua, born in 1907 and died in 1993. His painting career began at a very young age, in 1922, when he began exhibiting with the local Futurists Cantarelli, Fiozzi, and Monfardini. His friendship with Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and his contact with the European avant-garde were also crucial to his development. From that moment on, Bum's painting would always be characterized by experimentation with the use of complex and vibrant polychromes and the geometric decomposition of reality.
