Manzoni - Untitled

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

In this painting, Manzoni offers his own interpretation of the landscape, one that remains rooted in phenomenal reality, but exhibits several expressionistic overtones. First and foremost, the composition, which sees almost the entire canvas surface occupied by the rock in the foreground, leaving little space for the background. There is little spatial depth, and the paint application appears at times sketchy. Even from a chromatic perspective, there is a tendency toward cold, not entirely naturalistic, tones.

C. Manzoni appears to be a painter who straddles a naturalistic interpretation of his painting with an expressionistic synthesis. The process of abstraction is present in his works but is always controlled, halting when it might impede an understanding of sensory reality. A reality that, precisely thanks to his expressionistic overtones, becomes poetic and charged with symbols in Manzoni's paintings.
