caputo-senza-titolo
Ulisse Caputo - Untitled

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

In this landscape, we can appreciate the full pictorial mastery of Ulisse Caputo, who stands out for his language, fully in tune with the poetics of late-nineteenth-century Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. The subjects are quickly and immediately synthesized, giving the representation a distinct freshness. Caputo's pictorial style models the natural elements with his thick, dense brushstrokes, delineating them dynamically as if shaken by the elements or by their very existence. Compositionally, the work is divided in half by the horizon line, creating a striking chromatic balance between the blue of the sky and the green of the fields. The framing is highly evocative, following a diagonal vanishing point to the right.

Ulisse Caputo was a painter born in Salerno in 1872 and died in Paris in 1948. His father, a set designer and theater decorator, encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. He trained at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples under the guidance of Stanislao Lista and Domenico Morelli. However, in 1897, his works were initially disregarded at the Third Triennial Exhibition in Milan and at the "Salvator Rosa" exhibition in Naples. He then decided to move to Paris, where he fully established his artistic personality and achieved great success at all the most important exhibitions of the time.
