The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The artist Carlo Aimetti has dedicated his entire artistic research to landscape painting.

Carlo Aimetti's landscapes demonstrate how this artist, in his artistic career, reached a post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim, therefore, is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, breaking down the space into different planes despite the simplicity of the representation, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the artist with broad, dense brush strokes or more calligraphic strokes. In this particular work, we see how Aimetti uses an even more substantial brushstroke, distributing the color evenly in relief, further conveying the idea of the ruggedness of the rock formations. Furthermore, from a chromatic perspective, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette. Pale, light-filled tones, typical of Carlo Aimetti's landscape work, predominate.

Carlo Aimetti was born in Bisuschio in 1901 and passed away in Milan in 1987. A student of Felisari at the Accademia Ambrosiana in Milan, he devoted his life to landscape painting, depicting mountains, lakes, seascapes, parks and gardens, and flowers in all their splendor with refined technique. Above all, he interpreted, with impressionistic vision and great love, his native land, the Ceresio and Intelvi Valleys. Among Aimetti's talents, beyond painting, was his passion and sensitivity for music: a master violinist and organ player, he studied at the Milan Conservatory, where he distinguished himself in several sacred music concerts.
