carlo-bazzani-senza-titolo
Carlo Bazzani - Untitled

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of the depiction of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. In the present work, the artist proposes the subject of a still life with fish, a composition in which, instead of fruit, marine fauna predominates, often placed on the seashore. A painter famous for executing this type of subject was, for example, Filippo De Pisis.

This work highlights Carlo Bazzani's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition, whether a still life, a vase of flowers, or a landscape, is compressed into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the subject, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, fleshing out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures also play a fundamental role. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is blended with a balanced palette of references and correspondences.

Carlo Bazzani, Casina 1908-Reggio Emilia 1997. As can be seen from his works, Carlo Bazzani is a painter who has developed in-depth research into the representation of objects and their perception. His pictorial language draws on post-impressionist movements, reflecting his own unique approach.
