cesare-peruzzi-nudo-di-donna
Cesare Peruzzi - Nude Woman

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

In Cesare Peruzzi's works, which explore a traditional iconographic theme like the reclining female nude, we can see how this painter, even within an academic conception, is attentive to the innovations proposed by contemporary art. Indeed, the naturalistic rendering of the body is achieved through an extraordinary technique that faithfully captures sensory details. Furthermore, the subject's full forms reveal a precise desire to exalt plasticity. It is in the pictorial application, however, that we perceive the fullness of Peruzzi's artistic approach. His brushstrokes are always dynamic, making the subject's volumes quiver with atmospheric and luminous vibrations. In this painting in particular, moreover, the application takes on a more structural character. The individual brushstrokes are arranged on different planes in order to explore the subject's volumes and insert them into a composite and multifaceted space. The reference to Cézanne and Post-Impressionism in general is clear, although in Peruzzi a certain harmonious sense of composition always prevails.

Cesare Peruzzi was a painter originally from Montelupone, born in 1894 and died in Recanati in 1995. He trained primarily in Rome, where he made his debut in 1915 at the "Secession" exhibition, exhibiting alongside Degas, Cézanne, Renoir, Guidi, and Casorati. He honed his skills in the depiction of the nude, also studying at the Académie de France. From 1923 onward, he specialized in watercolor, launching a delicate and intimate production of genre scenes and portraits. He also received several commissions for sacred art, such as the chapel dedicated to San Giacomo della Marca in Monteprandone in 1926, the cycle "Seven Episodes from the Life of Saint Francis Xavier" in 1932, and Scenes from the Life of Saint Teresa in 1933 for the Basilica of Loreto. In 1955, he participated in the VII Rome Quadrennial.
