Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This work is a beautiful example of Cesare Peruzzi's less formal style. This style includes portraits and genre scenes, in which the artist loosens the execution into a less rigorous composition. Color, in fact, clearly takes center stage: distributed in rapid, concise brushstrokes, it ensures greater freshness and immediacy in the execution. Nevertheless, Cesare Peruzzi's flair for form is evident in this work as well. The almost geometric emphasis on volume is evident in the full contours of the face and hat, as well as in the mass of the torso.

Cesare Peruzzi was a painter originally from Montelupone, born in 1894 and died in Recanati in 1995. He trained primarily in Rome, where he made his debut in 1915 at the "Secession" exhibition, exhibiting alongside Degas, Cézanne, Renoir, Guidi, and Casorati. He honed his skills in the depiction of the nude, also studying at the Académie de France. From 1923 onward, he specialized in watercolor, launching a delicate and intimate production of genre scenes and portraits. He also received several commissions for sacred art, such as the chapel dedicated to San Giacomo della Marca in Monteprandone in 1926, the cycle "Seven Episodes from the Life of Saint Francis Xavier" in 1932, and Scenes from the Life of Saint Teresa in 1933 for the Basilica of Loreto. In 1955, he participated in the VII Rome Quadrennial.
