cesare-peruzzi-senza-titolo-3
Cesare Peruzzi - Untitled
Since its earliest days, portraiture has always been reserved for great figures, emperors, sovereigns, and wealthy members of the aristocracy. The physiognomy of the face, the desire to characterize the person's features, also highlighting their clothing and grooming, have proven essential characteristics for representation, through various pictorial techniques, from sculpture to painting. Over the centuries, especially towards the end of the nineteenth century and the mid-twentieth century, portraiture has increasingly established itself as a means of examining everyday reality, also bringing to the surface the psychological aspect of the figure depicted. In Cesare Peruzzi's portraits, the intimate characterization is evident at first glance, particularly in this full-length portrait of a peasant. The elderly gentleman carries a stick on which he leans; a sack lies on the ground, while a jacket draped loosely over his shoulders. The man's face is measured by a welcoming smile, as if he knew he was selling a portrait. The whole thing is accompanied by a landscape, hinted at by trees and an avenue that welcomes the figure.\r

Stylistically, Cesare Peruzzi proves himself an excellent figurative painter. The chromatic richness he creates each time unfolds in his paintings in a surprising way. His mastery of light and how it fills space in the right composition reveals the painter's mastery, harmonizing the portrayed figure with the bucolic setting. All this is explored through a swift brushstroke that explores the most human and humble side of the man, drawing us into the painting.
\r
Cesare Peruzzi was born in Montelupone, in the province of Macerata, in 1894. Throughout his life, he lived briefly in other Italian cities before settling in Recanati. He attended the Istituto Superiore di Belle Arti in Rome and completed his studies only after the war. Returning to Rome to complete his studies led him to the French Academy, where he had the opportunity to hone his techniques with expert teachers, honing his skills in life drawing and the male and female nude. His artistic debut came in 1915, when he debuted in Rome at the "Secessione" International Exhibition, exhibiting alongside artists such as Degas, Cézanne, Renoir, Guidi, and Casorati. From 1925 to 1935, the artist practiced watercolors and distinguished himself from the painting of the time. In 1928, the "Dictionary of Italian Painters" published by the "Dante Alighieri Publishing Company" listed him among the notable artists from the Marche region. The artist's career would be filled with solo exhibitions and major awards.
