charles-garry-senza-titolo
Charles Garry - Untitled

The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered equally important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. More specifically, Charles Garry's artistic production is directed at an investigation, conducted along the lines of existentialism and the analysis of human relationships, of a bourgeois world, captured in the daily routine of its gestures and rituals.

The work is quite exemplary of Charles Garry's conception of the bourgeois, existentialist genre scene. His style tends toward expressionism, in the sense that the artist achieves a certain reduction and abstraction of reality in favor of the rhythm of the composition, which always proceeds through broken, angular lines, useful for expressing inner turmoil. However, Garry's language is strongly influenced by the Art Deco climate that nurtured him, and thus his depictions of the upper middle class eschew the frenzies of historical expressionism, adopting instead a more symbolic and enigmatic form.

Charley (Charles Achille) Garry was born in 1891 in Paris and died there in 1973.
