Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

The portrait reflects the more realist tendencies in Cirillo Manicardi's artistic production. From the very subject itself, we note an interest in the lower classes of society. Furthermore, the subject is portrayed without any desire for idealization. Her expression is not posed, but natural and spontaneous. Likewise, the painter is unafraid to portray all facial details truthfully, including the signs of aging and poverty. We also note great accuracy in the depiction of clothing. Formally, the painter adopts a rapid, cursive style, typical of the cultural context of realism and verism.

Cirillo Manicardi was a painter from Reggio Emilia, where he was born in 1856 and died in 1925. A typical painter of the Italian context between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he divided his work between Art Nouveau refinements and raw veristic expressions. During a stay in Modena, he explored the style of the Macchiaioli. After moving to Florence, his style gradually shifted toward narrative verism. From 1887 onwards, he returned to Reggio Emilia, where, after obtaining his teaching qualification, he taught at the School of Fine Arts and later became its director.
