The Resta Codex or “Portable Gallery” by Father Sebastiano Resta is considered, together with Leonardo's Codex Atlanticus and the preparatory cartoon for Raphael's School of Athens, one of the most important works of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, which it became part of in 1709. It is the paper codex in which Father Resta, a great collector of graphic art, collected 289 drawings according to their artistic context.

The Resta Codex is also known as the "Portable Gallery" due to the ambitious project underlying its composition. Father Sebastiano Resta's goal was to create a veritable museum within his collection, a path catalogued by school and artistic discipline, offering a comprehensive overview of the Italian artistic landscape between the 15th and 17th centuries. The codex contains, divided by school, drawings by famous artists such as Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Guido Reni, Guercino, and the Carracci, along with artists less well-known during the era in which Father Resta lived and worked, such as Lattanzio Gambara, the Campi family, and Cavalier d'Arpino. These were chosen because they served his purpose of offering a comprehensive overview of the development of Italian drawing. Given the illustrious names included in the collection, it goes without saying that the quality of these drawings is extraordinary, both in technique and composition, within a collection that offers beautiful examples of Renaissance and Baroque art.

Amilcare Pizzi's edition of the Resta Codex offers a beautiful reproduction of one hundred plates of drawings, in the size and colors of the originals, printed on handmade paper in a run of 2,030 numbered copies. The selection of the one hundred plates, the approval of the reproductions, and the captions are due to Giorgio Fubini, the Ambrosiana's consultant for drawings. The text and descriptions of the plates are in Italian, French, English, and German.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/codice-resta-07d0d91d-db6f-42c5-ad4a-6dcf193e0593.jpg?v=1768474020
