cotigni-nudo-di-donna
Antonio Cotigni - Nude Woman

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

This work is an example of the many bas-reliefs that Antonio Cotigni dedicated to the study and research of the female form. The artist's exploration focuses on volume and movement. This particular work demonstrates how fundamental Cotigni's classical training was to his career. The artist pursues an ideal of pure, harmonious beauty through the creation of a balanced, almost geometric volume within the composition, yet one that comes to life thanks to a soft modeling that softens the forms.

Antonio Cotigni was born in Ficulle in 1940 and lives in Rome. Orphaned as a child, he managed to earn a diploma as a typographer, compositor, and engraver. His true passion was sculpture, which he discovered almost playfully, frequenting the workshops of the famous terracotta makers of his hometown as a child. The apprenticeship was tough, but Antonio Cotigni eventually succeeded in establishing himself and attracting the attention of art critics such as Argan, Servolini, Augusto Giordano, and many others. Among his numerous works are the monument to Totò, in his hometown of Naples; the monument to the Honorable Aldo Moro, in the square of the same name in Latina; and the 3.30-meter-tall bronze monument to the Poor Man of Assisi, in Latina.
