cristoforo-legname-senza-titolo-4
Cristoforo Legname - Untitled

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In this particular work, the painter Cristoforo Legname, with his proverbial eclecticism that made him open to every influence, creates an original landscape through a conceptual compositional idea. The landscape, in a theatrical and almost baroque manner, is seen through a false opening in the canvas that the artist has rendered using trompe-l'oeil.

Throughout his prolific artistic career, Cristoforo Legname traversed various phases of painting, primarily avant-garde and movements such as Informalism, Abstraction, and Cubism. However, in several works, he also employed a figurative style, as we see in this landscape. This language is necessary, in this case, to create a meaningful representation. The landscape revealed behind the tear in the canvas is the image of a revealed Nature that only the artist's gaze, free from constraints and mental patterns, can reveal to the viewer. To achieve this concept, Cristoforo Legname creates a highly effective symbolic representation, engaging the viewer with an illusionistic conception of the artwork rooted in the 17th-century Baroque. To achieve this, thanks to his versatility, the artist must provide a highly convincing and persuasive representation. Hence, the choice to create a landscape with a perfectly naturalistic rendering, further enhanced by a dynamic, impressionistic-style pictorial style. The entire landscape is pervaded by a golden brown light that provides atmospheric unity to the scene and creates an enchanted space. Even the opening in the canvas is painted in the same brown tones, creating perfect compositional harmony. The illusion is perfect, even if in this section Legname leans toward a more lived-in, almost gestural, pictorial style.

Cristoforo Legname was a famous Sicilian painter, originally from Gela.
