danilo-gede-senza-titolo
Danilo Gedè - Untitled

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Danilo Gedè's landscapes display a certain rigor and the absence of vital elements, such as people, animals, or plants. Gedè favors a desolate nature, where dry, dead vegetation prevails and the color black dominates. This type of landscape reminded him of the Russian campaign, in which Gedè fought and survived. The landscape, devoid of life, not only represents those places, but also represents for Gedè the state of mind associated with that experience.

This work is particularly interesting because, while Danilo Gedè's easel paintings adhere to a stark realism, this painting, on the other hand, is executed with a remarkable Impressionist technique. The artist uses rapid, hatched brushstrokes to quickly delineate shapes and volumes. This allows him to capture, with every single brushstroke, the effects of light and atmosphere on objects, managing to capture, even in monochrome, precise meteorological and environmental conditions with great immediacy. The entire monochrome palette, from the shore to the sky, is in fact designed to reflect the precise atmospheric conditions being depicted, in a perfect conception of plein air painting. As with the Impressionists, the perspective grid is not eliminated, but spatial depth is determined exclusively through the modulations of color.

Danilo Gedè was born in Livorno in 1911. He was self-taught, but achieved a certain level of fame by participating in various regional and national exhibitions, including the Milan Biennale. Among the awards he received are the Sanremo Prize (1957) and the “black and white” prize at the Città di Viareggio exhibition. His works are included in Italian and foreign collections.
