dante-ricci-volto-di-donna
Dante Ricci - Woman's Face

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This work is a typical example of the graphic production of artist Dante Ricci. In lithography, this artist achieves a remarkable level of formal excellence. From the very beginning of the composition, Ricci conceives a striking image, with the face framed in extreme close-up, yet allowing us to glimpse only a portion of it, leaving the woman's identity a mystery. The technique used to create the figure is extraordinary. The contours are delineated by a sharp yet vibrant black line, filling the subject with a vibrant life. This vitality is confirmed by the iridescent impasto that depicts the softness of the hand's skin and the fullness of the face, traversed by delicate shading. Then, again, the flowing mass of hair, which seems to move in the air. And, finally, the extraordinary realism of the foliage surrounding the woman.

Dante Ricci was born in Genazzano in 1921 and died in Rome in 2009.
