domenico-villano-il-mondo-dietro-langolo
Domenico Villano - The World Around the Corner

The work was created using the Décollage technique, used by various artists since the 1950s, which involves layering posters or flyers, which are then gradually torn away. This technique is undoubtedly linked, first and foremost, to the poetics of the object, as it involves the use of discarded materials from consumer society. Another key component is Pop Art's interest in mass media. Finally, artistic gesture also comes into play, as the artist tears down the posters. The greatest exponent of the Décollage technique was Mimmo Rotella.

Domenico Villano draws directly from the aesthetics of Pop Art; indeed, the protagonists of his works are the icons of the 1950s that appear on posters. The poster itself, or rather, the object, is reconfigured by the artist through the act of tearing. This practice simply introduces the accidental nature of reality directly and suddenly into the artwork, giving it a new meaning. The tears, which imitate the ravages of time on the posters or the effects of weather, shift the work from an abstract dimension to the concrete dimension of existence. The artist further reconfigures the work through gestural painting, inspired by Abstract Expressionism and, more directly, by the Pop Art practiced by the Piazza del Popolo School. The use of advertising elements and graphic symbols inspired by the world of comics also fall within the context of a Pop aesthetic.

Domenico Villano was born in Battipaglia in 1980.
