donatella-isola-cactus-iii
Donatella Isola - Cactus III

The work draws on a pop aesthetic in its use of stereotypical images or their mechanical reproduction. Pop Art was born in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as a result of artists' interest in and criticism of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art presuppose a sort of double bond with the world of consumerism and the mass media. On the one hand, the artwork is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising or comic book language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. On the other, it is the advertising images and consumer goods themselves that become works of art, as the most genuine and truthful expression of the new society. Donatella Isola's artistic production is inspired by a pop aesthetic with particular attention to the world of fashion and design, and the fascinating object becomes the protagonist in a type of representation that looks to dynamic and modern languages. The strongly linear design creates areas suitable for accommodating compact chromatic zones in which electric tones confront each other in a balance made of illuminations and dissonances.

In this work, the artist's attention is focused on the image of a cactus. All the hallmarks of Donatella Isola's signature language are present, as the comic-book style is fully transposed into a pictorial dimension. The subject's caricatured and imaginative features are captured with a thick black line that creates square shapes. The color scheme, featuring bold hues, is compact. Donatella Isola's skill, beyond its technical prowess, must be measured by her creative ability to create fun and characterful images with minimal graphic means, truly transforming the comic-book pop image into a complete work.

Donatella Isola was born in Cremona and has lived in Florence for 46 years. She worked in fashion and industrial design and was the stylist for her own clothing company from 1975 to 1998. At the same time, she collaborated on projects for several major companies (Terzani, Bialetti, Il Coccio, L'Isolachenonc'è, Arti e Mestieri, Piaggio). With the closure of her company, she was finally able to indulge in painting, which had always been her great passion (she had always drawn, but for fabrics). She then began painting portraits of her two children and numerous other subjects. Donatella Isola's paintings are inspired by fashion and furnishings, a continuation of her long-standing practice. She has participated in three galleries, including Enrico Coveri's in Florence, and in exhibitions in luxury hotels, achieving considerable success and sales.
