The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Edoardo Gordigiani's interpretation of landscape is still grounded in phenomenal reality, but this is distorted and forced into a decidedly expressionist vein. The artist compresses the composition into a two-dimensional surface, where the various elements overlap in an anti-naturalistic manner. The objects are arranged following slanted, oblique lines. The brushstrokes are synthetic, simplifying the forms with just a few touches. The color, also reflecting this expressionist tendency, is based on bright shades of purple and blue, with little adherence to natural truth.

Edoardo Gordigiani, Florence 1866 - Popolano di Marradi 1961.
