elio-lazzari-campiello-2
Elio Lazzari - Campiello

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. The artist Elio Lazzari, considered the last of the vedutisti, was deeply rooted in the depiction of a candid and simple everyday life through which he celebrated the city of Venice.

Elio Lazzari's plates are particularly interesting, as they demonstrate how the style of this artist, who primarily devoted himself to painting, can also adapt to engraving. Here, the artist adopts an even more concise approach, effectively representing the space and its contents with just a few graphic signs. Despite the simplicity of his expressive means, the artist manages to offer us a vivid and refreshing account of Venetian daily life, in keeping with his easel work.

Elio Lazzari was born on June 6, 1942, in Venice, where he still lives and where his celebrated studio is located in the Dorsoduro-Campiello Barbaro area. Throughout his long creative career, the artist has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in Italy and abroad, always garnering great public and critical acclaim. Of particular note are the shows held in all of Italy's major cities, at the Marly Gallery in Luxembourg, Lincoln Center in New York, the Marin-Prince Galleries Chevy Chase in Maryland, and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington, DC. He has received numerous positive reviews from leading critics, including, notably, that of Ezio Danesini, who, in the newspaper La Repubblica, described Elio Lazzari as "one of the last great Venetian vedutisti" (view painters) during the major exhibition "Vitality of Art" held at the Galleria Lazzaro by Corsi in Milan.
