elvio-marchionni-papa-francesco-9
Elvio Marchionni - Pope Francis

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

In this work, artist Elvio Marchionni departs from his usual production of medieval frescoes or Renaissance painting citations. These elements are confined only to the background, where, using his usual techniques, Marchionni references Cimabue's Saint Francis from the Lower Basilica of Assisi. The central focus is instead on the portrait of Pope Francis, executed by the artist with an extraordinary silkscreen technique capable of capturing the pontiff's features with vivid clarity and hyperrealistic precision. It is a portrait of extraordinary objective force, in which the figure is illuminated by a strong light coming from the left, highlighting its volume and physiognomic resemblance. The play of shadows is also remarkable, further highlighting the extraordinary precision of detail in the almost photographic rendering of the face.

Painter born in Spello in 1954. His entire artistic research is grounded in the recovery of memories and emotions from the past. His paintings appear like fragments of torn frescoes, references to 15th-century Umbrian painting, of which Marchionni is a great connoisseur. His sculptures presuppose a study of Renaissance harmony and proportion. However, this process of recovering memory merges, in Marchionni, with a careful exploration of artistic language in relation to a contemporary sensibility.
