elvio-marchionni-tenerezza-3
Elvio Marchionni - Tenderness

The putto, or winged child, is one of the most recurring and widespread iconographic motifs throughout the history of Western art. It derives directly from Greek and Roman antiquity and originated as a representation of Eros/Cupid, the god of love, or, more generally, as a cupid. Precisely because of its connection to classical culture, the figure of the putto was systematically revived in the humanist 15th century. It was Donatello who first used the putto as a decorative motif in his famous Cantorie, inspired by the model of ancient sarcophagi. Subsequently, especially from the 16th century onwards, the figure of the putto became an active part of major religious scenes, undergoing a transposition from classical mythology to the Christian religion and taking on the role of an angel with childlike features. In the 17th century, it was a very popular iconographic motif, especially in the Baroque period, sometimes through the representation of just the head with wings.

In this pictorial version of his famous "Strappi," Elvio Marchionni favors a composition still inspired by the Italian Renaissance, but with a more markedly classicist bent. The artist engages in a typically fifteenth-century philological operation, consisting of the archaeological recovery of themes from classical Greek and Roman art. The interpretative approach also displays a pronounced plasticity, inserted into a Brunelleschi-esque perspective space, drawing inspiration from the research of Piero della Francesca, Paolo Uccello, and Mantegna. Marchionni, however, reworks the model, working primarily on the patina of antiquity, artfully producing the work's very degradation, which enhances its charm and value.

Elvio Marchionni is an artist born in Spello in 1954. His entire artistic research is grounded in the recovery of memories and emotions from the past. His paintings appear like fragments of torn frescoes, references to 15th-century Umbrian painting, of which Marchionni is a great connoisseur. His sculptures presuppose a study of Renaissance harmony and proportion. However, this process of recovering memory merges, in Marchionni, with a careful exploration of artistic language in keeping with a contemporary sensibility.
