emanuele-bettini-senza-titolo-2
Emanuele Bettini - Untitled

The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.

In this work, Emanuele Bettini completely abandons figuration and, instead, the composition is dominated by sign-gestural elements, definitively characterizing the poetics of this painting with the incommunicability typical of Informal Art. Even in terms of execution, the artist adopts a decidedly gestural, abstract-expressionist approach. This reveals the hermetic nature of this representation, which transfigures the painter's perception into a system of signs that leaves the viewer with no reference points. Another fundamental component in Emanuele Bettini's research remains chromatic, where the painted surface is matched to a predominant color and calibrated to elegant harmonies with a profoundly spiritual meaning.

Emanuele Bettini (Prato, January 20, 1917 – Prato, November 21, 2002) was an Italian poet, writer, and painter. A painter of undoubted talent, his sources of inspiration included the surrealism of Joan Miró, the Futurism of Giacomo Balla, to whom he was bound by esteem and friendship, the faces of Massimo Campigli and Amedeo Modigliani, and the enchanted flights of Marc Chagall. His depictions are sometimes bitter and grotesque, sometimes surreal and populated by creative and colorful characters, but always ironic.
