emanuele-pandolfini-ritratto
Emanuele Pandolfini - Portrait

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

The composition achieves a supremely naturalistic rendering even through the simple formal means of the graphic line. Indeed, the artist needs only a simple, loose, sinuous line and light washes of color to convey the fullness of the volumes onto the paper and plastically enhance this female figure and her drapery. In addition to the extraordinary precision in capturing the sensory detail, Pandolfini has brought it to life through the play of shadows, achieved through precise hatching, which gently blurs the contours and renders them undefined. The realist element (which brings Pandolfini closer to a master like Guttuso) is also significant, and in this work it emerges through the characterization of the physiognomy with expressionistic verve.

Emanuele Pandolfini was born in Palermo in 1929. He was especially popular for the acute realism of his portraits (famous are those of Cardinal Ruffini and Vitaliano Brancati). In 1961, he moved to Rome, where his career developed with a long series of solo exhibitions. His works are present in important public and private collections, not only in Italy but also abroad.
