The devastation wrought by the Second World War left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge resulted in a total rejection of any visual language, which resulted in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eThe distinctiveness of Emilio Vedova's style is also evident in this work on paper. His Informal aesthetic is not focused on materiality, as in the \"brute\" art of the French artists Fautrier and Dubuffet; instead, his primary means of expression is gesture. An automatic yet romantic gesture, with which the painter fills the surface of the painting with signs that are nothing more than the interpretation of political and existential issues. A type of expressiveness, therefore, that has much in common with American Abstract Expressionism.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp style=\"text-align: justify;\"\u003eEmilio Vedova was a Venetian painter and printmaker (1919-2006). Trained in Expressionism, he initially joined the Corrente group along with Birolli and Guttuso. After participating in the Resistance, in Milan in 1946 he was among the signatories of the \"Beyond Guernica\" manifesto, which established the links between art, politics, and society.
