His father, Natale Bencini, was a renowned painter in the post-Macchiaioli tradition. The family soon moved to Arezzo, where he received his cultural education. He attended the Art Institute of Arezzo, where he rediscovered his true calling and distinguished himself for his aptitude for drawing. In 1962, after graduating, he earned a qualification to teach drawing and art history in state schools. Thus began a career divided between painting and teaching.
