ermogene-miraglia-natura-morta
Ermogene Miraglia - Still Life

Still life is a pictorial genre that depicts inanimate objects, such as fruit, flowers, food, musical instruments, and everyday objects, often arranged in elaborate compositions. Originating in the 16th century, it was particularly popular in the Netherlands and Italy during the Baroque period. During this period, themes such as vanity, the transience of life, and the ephemeral beauty of earthly things were explored through pictorial representation. The genre allows artists to explore diverse compositions and experiment with detailed and precise techniques. Still life also expresses a reflection on the fleeting nature of time.

Stylistically, Ermogene Miraglia perfectly interprets the still life genre, creating compositions rich in inspiration and detail. The influence of his hometown, Naples, will be a great inspiration for his paintings. He captures the bustling life of the markets and squares of his city, to which he will always remain deeply attached. Ermogene Miraglia's painting focuses color with evocative brushstrokes and palette knife strokes that aim to create interesting chromatic contrasts. The juxtaposed splashes of color suggest a distinctly Impressionist influence. In addition to finding a harmony in the drawing, an almost Renaissance-like pictorial classicism, it approaches tonal harmony. The pictorial material becomes rich, emphasizing the clarity of the brushstrokes.

Ermogene Miraglia was born in Naples in 1907. The eldest of six children, the painter was the son of a doctor and a musician and mandolin virtuoso. Ermogene Miraglia earned a Doctorate in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Portici. Immediately after graduation, he won two competitions, one for railway inspector and one for school principal. The painter was self-taught, although he was later awarded the title of Honorary Academician by the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His art was influenced by the painters Antonio Mancini and Vincenzo Irolli, with whom he shared a taste for full-bodied, textured pictorial impasto. In addition to forming an artistic partnership with Vincenzo Irolli, Ermogene Miraglia also developed a sincere friendship, from whom he learned to coagulate and concentrate color in brushstrokes and spatula strokes and to create light through juxtapositions of color. The artist participated with considerable success in various exhibitions in Italy and abroad and his signature was included in the Comanducci.
