ernesto-piccolo-casa-sul-lago
Ernesto Piccolo - House on the Lake

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This graphic work is a perfect example of Ernesto Piccolo's landscape production. He essentially bases his work on two elements: form and color. For this reason, he almost breaks down the landscape's elements, seeking to transfigure his perception of tangible reality into a synthesis of pure forms. His works, therefore, are characterized by perfectly balanced compositions of circles and squares that display the shapes of objects in a complex, non-unique space. Throughout, there is a thorough investigation of the reality represented, which draws particular attention to Paul Cézanne. However, compared to the French master, who favored earthy tones, the second defining characteristic of Ernesto Piccolo's style comes into play: color. His works are distinguished by their brilliant polychromy, whereby each shape constructed on the surface of the work takes on a vibrant, luminous hue.

Ernesto Piccolo was born in Zagarise in 1936 and moved to Florence with his family at a young age, where he studied at the Art Institute and later at the Academy of Fine Arts. He began exhibiting in the 1960s and around the same time met the poet Mario Luzi, with whom he established a lasting friendship and collaboration. He was a frequent visitor to the Gabinetto Vieusseux, where he came into contact with several intellectuals of the time, whose exchanges helped shape his pictorial language. It was at the Gabinetto Vieusseux that he exhibited his "Suggestioni" series, inspired by Luzi's poetics, in 1975. He also taught printmaking techniques at the Academies of Fine Arts in Palermo, Venice, and Florence. Among the most important solo exhibitions of recent years are the anthological exhibition Una grande avventura lirica e umana at Palazzo Piccolomini in Pienza in 2002, I luoghi della mente tra luce e colore at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence in 2010, and also in Florence The poetics of colour and form at Palazzo Medici Riccardi in 2013.
