ernesto-tavernari-attesa
Ernesto Tavernari - Waiting

Ernesto Tavernari's painting is a heterogeneous blend of elements, both abstract and figurative, to create an original artistic language. The work in question features the human figure. The frontal female figure appears almost frightened, disturbed by the viewer who interrupts her. She raises her arms as if to hide, and all we see are her large, wide-open blue eyes, still staring at us.

The work takes the viewer on a journey through the artist's perception, which is no longer strictly tied to the real world but transcends it, seeking to bring his vision to an extreme synthesis, resulting in an almost surreal context. In this image, the body is distorted; it's as if the figure no longer has a neck, but the head rests directly on the shoulders, while the rib cage is completely sunken. Even Ernesto Tavarnari's purely surrealist works are distinguished by the presence of deformed images, whereby the subjects elongate or swell, taking on monstrous features, or almost imploding into biomorphic organisms. Tavernari eschews an objective and concrete pictorial form, leaning instead toward a synthetic, almost abstract approach. Overall, the work appears drawn and almost monochromatic, conveying to the viewer a sense of uncertainty and suspension of reality.

Ernesto Tavernari was born in Lucca in 1911. In the 1920s, he moved to Milan, where he began his career at Brera, first as a student and then as a teacher. In the 1930s and 1940s, he designed the scenography for major works by Scaglieri and executed a series of frescoes for churches and charterhouses. In 1963, he held his first solo exhibition at the Cavallino Gallery in Venice. A student of Achille Funi, over a career spanning nearly 80 years, he collaborated with the greatest Italian painters and sculptors of the last century, from Carlo Carrà to Lucio Fontana. He participated in important exhibitions and exhibited with gallery owners such as Carlo Cardazzo. The artist passed away in 2007.
