After the Resistance, in which he actively participated, he was a leader of the "Pittura" group and editor of the magazines "il 45" and "Realismo," directed by Raffaele De Grada. In the 1950s, in addition to exhibiting several times at the Venice Biennale, he participated in the Realist exhibition at the Leicester Gallery in London and had a solo show at the Heller Gallery in New York. During this period, the themes of his painting were characterized by his encounter with the rural reality of Calabria, experienced firsthand during his long stays in Melissa , which began during the first land occupations in Southern Italy, and by the industrial urban landscapes of Milan and Paris, places he would return to repeatedly over the years.
\r
In 1963 one of his works was exhibited at the Contemporary Italian Paintings exhibition, set up in some Australian cities. [2]
\r
From the 1960s onward, the flourishing of his works and the proliferation of initiatives testify to Treccani's uninterrupted commitment, both human and artistic, characterized by a tireless effort to spread culture and artistic debate, a concrete commitment to life's situations, and a profound love for people and things. Among the works of this period are the five large canvases inspired by Pavese's "The Moon and the Bonfires" (1962-1963), the cycle of works "From Melissa to Valenza" (1964-1965), the series of watercolors dedicated to a trip to Cuba in 1965, the large canvas People of Faces (1969-1975), begun on the day of the funerals of the victims of the Piazza Fontana massacre; later, in 1976, major exhibitions in Volgograd, Moscow, and St. Petersburg. Since then, Treccani has developed the different seasons of his artistic research in many forms, continuing to work and exhibit in small and large centres, in Italy and abroad, and alternating this "itinerant" activity with regular creative stays in Macugnaga and Forte dei Marmi, towns to which the artist has been strongly linked in life and in painting.\r

In 1977 he painted the banner of the Palio di Siena of 16 August of that year, won by the Nobile Contrada dell'Oca and currently exhibited in the historical-museum headquarters of the latter. [3]
\r
In 1978, he founded the Corrente Foundation, a center for cultural initiatives, exhibitions, and debates in various fields of culture and art, as well as a collection and study center for documents relating to the period between the birth of the movement and the years of Realism. In 1982, he had a solo exhibition at the group show "Maestri e Giovani" at the Centro d'Arte Cultura e Costume in Milan, alongside Mauro Reggiani, Ottone Rosai, Galliano Mazzon, among others, and the young artists Nino Bonacina and Lino Riccardi. In 1989, the City of Milan dedicated a large retrospective to the artist at the Palazzo Reale, while another important retrospective of his works was hosted at the Bandera Foundation in Busto Arsizio in 2003. In 2004, he created the series of large stained-glass windows "Energy, Lights and Colors," exhibited in Lugano, Riga, Budapest, and Prague. In 2006, the City of Forte dei Marmi staged the exhibition "The Mutations of Realism – Unpublished Works 2003-06" at the Fortino, the result of a renewed exploration of forms centered on color. In 2008, again at the Palazzo Reale, Treccani participated in the exhibition "Corrente, le parole della vita. Opere 1930-1945," with a room dedicated to his paintings from that period. A large retrospective exhibition, curated by Giorgio Seveso , inaugurated the renovated rooms of Palazzo Barberino in Montichiari (BS), the birthplace of the artist's father, Senator Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri. Among the most recent exhibitions we recall the exhibition "Words and painting. Ernesto Treccani meets poetry, epic and novel", at the Pinacoteca Civica in Savona from December 2011 to March 2012, again curated by Giorgio Seveso.
