Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

Eugene Ciuca's paintings consist largely of female portraits, created with his unmistakable expressive language. Ciuca strips his subjects of all sensory information and form, reducing them to the pure expressiveness of the painter's gesture. This gesture is expressed through a curved, sinuous line that traces the figures in a pared-down manner. Through this simple gesture, the artist manages to convey a powerful spirituality that is evident in the strength of the line. Ciuca's lines not only simplify his subjects, but also distort them, achieving an even more pronounced expressiveness. His style is also pared-down in its use of color, which is limited to two or three shades on neutral backgrounds.

Eugene Ciuca was a Romanian artist born in 1913 and passed away in 2005. A master of sculpture in polychrome marble, granite, wood, onyx, ceramic, bronze, copper, and mosaic, he also created numerous paintings—many on glass—as well as watercolors, engravings, and drawings. Throughout his career, which spanned more than half a century, Ciucă explored diverse themes and concepts. Through his work, he blended elements of Romanian folk art with the more contemporary concept of the fourth dimension of art. A large number of Ciucă's works were dedicated to Dante Alighieri. Inspired by the beauty of Dante's muse Beatrice, he created countless sculptures, paintings, and drawings depicting the delicate female figure that would become his trademark. In addition to several monumental sculptures depicting the poet, Ciucă created a series of paintings titled The Divine Comedy in 600 images.
